PRESS NOTE

WEBUILD: ROGUN DAM, THE TALLEST DAM IN THE WORLD, TAKES SHAPE IN TAJIKISTAN

TAJIKISTAN PRESIDENT VISITS CONSTRUCTION SITE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF CENTRAL ASIA THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DOUBLE THE COUNTRY'S ENERGY PRODUCTION

  • The dam has almost reached 1,110 metres on sea level, a technical milestone that will allow to further raise the level of the basin and increase the energy production

  • With its 335 metres in height, an installed capacity equivalent to nuclear reactors, and the ability to supply energy to approximately 10 million people, Rogun represents an energy breakthrough for Tajikistan and for the whole of Central Asia

  • In September, there will also be the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in Ethiopia, Africa's largest dam, also built by Webuild

Rogun (Tajikistan), August 28, 2025 - The Rogun Dam, built by Webuild in Tajikistan and set to become the tallest dam in the world, will soon reach a new milestone: an elevation of 1,100 metres above sea level. This technical advancement will allow the reservoir level to rise further, significantly increasing the dam's energy production capacity.

Tajikistan President Emomalī Rahmon, testified to the project's strategic importance as he visited the construction site with Prime Minister Qohir Rasulzoda, a delegation of ministers, government executives and the client's, OJSC Rogun HPP, representatives. This institutional visit provided an opportunity to closely observe the progress of the project, carried out on behalf of the client OJSC Rogun HPP, which promises to

transform the energy scenario of the country and of Central Asia as a whole. The Rogun project represents a concrete and long-lasting solution in a country where around the 70% of the population experiences power outages, especially during the winter season.

Rogun, when finished, will be 335 metres in height and will have an installed capacity equivalent to three nuclear reactors, supplying energy to approximately 10 million people, doubling Tajikistan's energy production and contributing to the region's energy stability. The Rogun project is one of the most significant examples of the Webuild Group's commitment to sustainable development and energy security for nations.

During the last year, the dam registered a significant advancement of works, with a rise of as much as 100 metres, involving the placement of approximately 13 million cubic metres of embankment material that forms the dam's body. Of these, approximately 3.5 cubic metres of clay material were used for building the dam's impermeable core.

Concomitantly, more than 180,000 linear metres of injections were carried out, fundamental interventions for consolidating the foundation of the dam and its abutments, and to build the hydraulic curtain within the abutments. Significant interventions were also made to the various tunnels, where, according to the work's advancement, concrete injections and plugging works were also made.

The Rogun construction site is also a symbol of engineering innovation and resilience. Built in an extreme climate context, with very cold winters and summer storms, the project is a logistic and technical challenge that Webuild is meeting, after a track record that includes building over 300 dams and hydroelectric projects worldwide, confirming itself as a global leader in the water sector. Webuild, in these very same days, as Rogun advances, is also preparing to celebrate another historical milestone: the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa's largest dam, scheduled for September.

In addition to Rogun and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Webuild is currently engaged in other major hydroelectric projects on a global scale, including Snowy 2.0, Australia's most ambitious hydroelectric project. This significant commitment in the water sector was recently reaffirmed by the latest rankings published by ENR Engineering News-Record, which confirm Webuild as number one in the Top 250 International Contractors ranking. A global leadership spanning over a decade, that reflects a deep expertise in building dams, water treatment plants, aqueducts and resilient infrastructure that address the global challenges related to water resource management.
